Commonfolk - Mornington Peninsula

Welcome to Commonfolk!

"Born under the light of the southern cross in the backstreets of Mornington’s industrial estate, the Commonfolk Universe has been expanding since 2013. We source the galaxy’s finest coffees direct from our long-term producer partners, and roast and brew them to perfection for like-minded folk. Our vision is to roast out-of-this world coffee, improve our communities, and have fun while doing it. We take risks and try new things so we can always be the best, without making others feel the worst. We love to partner with like minded cafes and venues to provide a world class coffee program for their businesses."

"Sometimes you have to step back, relax, and see the whole, not the parts. The summary, not the intro or conclusion. The full album, not just track one and that other good one. The twelve months, not just next Monday. The cinematic universe, not just the post-credit scene. Some people say you have to look at the big picture. Not us. We just say Big Picture. Because Big Picture isn't just about what's in your cup (though it's very good in your cup). It's about everything circling around it: our producers oversees, our wholesale pals, and you yes you, reading this. You're part of the whole. Without our producers, we couldn't roast. Without you, we couldn't brew. Without both, we'd just be sitting in a warehouse surrounded by bags of green beans and questionable life choices. This year, Big Picture means record volume from Zukuka Bora in Uganda, new beginnings with Vava in Kenya, and a blend that pops it all together. Naturals from Uganda, washed lots from Kenya. Bright, sweet, a little humble, and definitely yum."

"We first connected with Keremba last year through some trusted coffee friends. Having lived in Melbourne years ago, he was fully indoctrinated into the world of specialty coffee. He's since taken that passion back home to Tanzania, where he now produces outstanding lots through his company, Communal Shamba, and supports a network of farmers with a clear path to market.

This release comes from the Mbozi district in the Songwe region, a community that's just formed its own AMCOS (Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society) after previously relying on another to sell their coffee. With Keremba's guidance, they've stepped into independence.
The partnership runs deep. Communal Shamba supplies the community with costly inputs before harvest to help lift both yields and quality. The coffee is fully washed at a shared Central Pulping Unit (CPU), improving consistency and processing standards across the board. Once dried, the parchment returns to Communal Shamba for milling and meticulous hand sorting to produce export-grade lots."

"Uvuu Factory is one of 6 central processing sites that are part of the Kikima Farmers’ Cooperative. This is a somewhat less known region for Kenyan coffee, traditionally top-end specialty coffee comes from Mt Kenya or Mt Elgon. This region has been farming and producing coffee for a long time, but recently the local government and cooperatives have put energy into gaining some market share. The farmers of the Uvuu Factory work together to pool resources and create uniform lots that are of an exportable size. The sharing of costs and sharing of infrastructure means each farmer doesn’t have to buy their own equipment and waste capital that could be spent on family or other ways that might improve coffee quality.

This lot is fully washed, floated, fermented overnight submerged in tanks, and dried on raised beds. The result is bright and layered, with notes of candied orange, papaya and the creamy sweetness of lemon meringue pie."
